In the original mini-comics series released with the first toys that came out, He-man was portrayed as a nomadic barbarian on Eternia. Eternia was a land of myth, magic and fantasy. At that time, the world of Eternia was struggling from the outcome of a Great War, which has destroyed the civilizations that once overpowered the lesser beings but has brought about advanced weaponry and machinery.
The Castle Grayskull Sorceress, who was called “The Goddess” in the initial appearances, gives special weapons and powers to He-Man. He, in turn, uses these to guard Castle Grayskull’s secrets from the wicked villain, Skeletor.
After a couple of series in the mini-comics, the scenario is revised. He-Man was depicted as Prince Adam, the son of King Randor and Queen Marlena. They lived and ruled in the Kingdom of Eternos, in the planet Eternia. Queen Marlena is later revealed to be from planet Earth, which made He-Man only half-Eternian.
In the newer versions, the Castle Grayskull’s sorceress bestows Prince Adam with a power to change into He-Man by holding up his sword (known as the “Power Sword” or the "Sword of Power") and saying, "By the power of Grayskull...I have the power!". In these early versions, the Power Sword has been divided into two, one half was entrusted to He-Man, and the other being searched for or occasionally possessed by Skeletor. Whoever possesses both halves would give him the supremacy to rule over Castle Grayskull.
Prince Adam had a pet tiger named Cringer. It was a cowardly green tiger, which changes into a gigantic and courageous armored tiger named Battle Cat when Prince Adam transforms into He-Man. Battle Cat also existed prior to his doppelganger, similar to He-Man. He was also He-Man's stallion and ferocious fighting companion.
Prince Adam also has a friend in the strong-willed and beautiful Teela. Teela was the Royal Guard’s female Captain and the adopted daughter of Prince Adam’s mentor Duncan. Since she was the Captain of the Guard, she was assigned to guard the Prince. She was able to do this loyally, however she often views Adam as being too lazy and cowardly, and unaware of his other identity as He-Man. Teela was revealed to be the Sorceress’ only daughter, and the future heiress of Grayskull. Unfortunately, the Sorceress had to give her up for adoption when she was only a baby.
Duncan, who was known as Man-At-Arms, is the innovator of weapons and technology of the Eternian royal family. In most of the episodes, Man-At-Arms reveals some new and incredible weapons that aid He-Man and his group.
Castle Grayskull, which looks like a giant skull, is where He-Man obtains his powers. The Sorceress lives inside it. She grants Prince Adam his ability to transform into He-Man and communicates through mental telepathy with him. She was also the one who created the harness of He-Man using Korodite, a rare Eternian mineral. This harness enhances his power and strength even more.
In order to defend his family, He-Man kept his identity and powers secret and only shared it with his close allies: the Sorceress, Orko, Man-At-Arms and Battle Cat.
When She-Ra, the Princess of Power was introduced, this list eventually included Adora / She-Ra, Light Hope, Spirit/Swift Wind, Loo-Kee, Kowl and Madame Razz. The original series also includes Granamyr the dragon, Zodak the cosmic enforcer and "The Rainbow Warrior". He-Man is often accompanied by his many allies in battles, like Stratos and Ram-Man.
Later on, Adam’s twin sister, Adora is revealed. She was supposedly Eternia’s princess, but was really a leader of The Great Rebellion versus Hordak on planet Etheria. Adora, similar to Adam, has also been endowed with the power of Grayskull. She has a sword as well, that she uses to turn into She-Ra, Princess of Power.
Skeletor is He-Man's chief rival. Snake Mountain was Skeletor's center for operations. It was a fortress which was made of black basalt that has a gigantic stone snake coiled surrounding it. Snake Mountain is situated on Eternia’s Dark Hemisphere.
Skeletor is the leader of a diverse crew of allies that fights against He-Man and his friends; the most popular are Evil-Lyn, the sorceress, Beast Man who was the clumsy master of the animal world, Trap-Jaw, Tri-Klops and Mer-Man, the fish lord.
Whether you loved it or hated it, He-Man: Masters of the Universe definitely had an influential and compelling effect on the design and marketing of toys. Regardless of how you felt with the final outcome, Martin Arriola, a senior staff designer with Mattel, was able to sum it up the best: "It was a fun line and I enjoyed doing it," he said. "Without a doubt, a lot of cool stuff came out of He-Man."
