The original plot of the 1987 animated series is very different from the plot of comics created by Mirage Studios, to apparently make it suitable for a whole family audience. In the animated TV series, Splinter is a respectable ninja master whose name was previously Hamato Yoshi. Yoshi was exiled from the Japan’s Foot Clan after he was tricked by the defiant Oroku Saki. He then moved to the sewers of New York City.
Yoshi lived in the sewers together with his rat friends. One day, he stumbled upon four turtles, which were accidentally dropped by a young boy into the sewer. He kept them and one day when he got back from his explorations, he found the turtles coated with glowing ooze. This substance caused the turtles to become human-like and Yoshi to become a humanoid rat. This is when Yoshi took on the pseudonym “Splinter”.
The four Turtles are then adopted by Yoshi as his sons. He gave them the names of his favorite renaissance artists: Leonardo from Leonardo Da Vinci, Donatello from Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, Raphael from Raffaello Sanzio and Michaelangelo from Michaelangelo Buonarroti. He trains and teaches them the art of ninjitsu. The Turtles cover their faces with masks of distinctive colors. Each Turtle also has a distinct weapon that they are skilled on using.
In the meantime, Oroku Saki flew from Japan to New York City, looking for Yoshi to destroy him. He becomes connected to Krang, who was a warlord from his old home Dimension X and is now an alien disembodied brain. Saki then takes on a new character in the name of Shredder. He wears a suit with razor spikes, a metal mask covering his mouth and long cape.
It is later revealed that the ooze that mutated the Splinter and the Turtles was intentionally placed in the sewers by Shredder to destroy Yoshi or Splinter, as Shredder thought the ooze would kill him. The Turtles then vow to destroy Shredder for their master, Splinter. They plan to force Shredder to give Splinter his old form as a human, which evolves into a full-blown adventure of stopping Shredder’s evildoings. The Turtles become vigilante crime-fighters. In the start, the Turtles were trying to hide their identity from the public but eventually, in the later seasons, it was clear that the people were aware of them.
Together, the Turtles fight the evil alliance of Shredder and Krang and their robotic Foot Soldiers, along with Bebop and Rocksteady. Bebop and Rocksteady are two street gangsters that mutated into animal form after being exposed to Shredder’s ooze. Bringing the Technodrome to the surface of the earth was the center of their quest for the domination of the world. Technodrome is the mobile fortress of Krang and their base of operation.
Near the end of the series, the Turtles finally succeed in banishing Shredder and Krang back to Dimension X. They tear down their engines and the Technodrome’s “trans-dimensional portal" to prevent them from coming back to Earth. After that, the cartoon took on a darker tone, much like the original comic book. The sky changed from blue to a dark red sky.
A new alien villain was introduced in the form character of an evil warlord, Lord Dregg. He quickly becomes their chief nemesis. Lord Dregg then begins a false campaign versus the Turtles, which turns the citizens against them and on his alliance’s side. However, the Turtles were victorious in trapping Lord Dregg in Dimension X on the last episode.
