“Voltron: Defender of the Universe” was released in the U.S. in 1984 as an animated series. Voltron was derived from independent cartoons from Japan that were edited and dubbed to be viewed by North American audiences.
“…From
days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a
legend. The legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe. A mighty
robot, loved by good, feared by evil. As Voltron\'s legend grew, peace
settled across the galaxy. On Planet Earth, a Galaxy Alliance was
formed. Together with the good planets of the Solar System, they
maintained peace throughout the universe until a new horrible menace
threatened the galaxy. Voltron was needed once more. This is the story
of the superforce of space explorers. Specially trained and sent by the
alliance to bring back, Voltron: Defender of the Universe…”
At
the beginning of the series, Voltron is shown being broken apart by
Haggar the witch into five pieces or five individual robot lions.
Thinking
that Voltron is now out of the picture, the King Zarkon, with the help
of a Haggar and Lotor, plans to gradually take over the universe using
monsters and his mutated “Robeasts” to wreak havoc. Because of this,
the Galaxy Alliance dispatches a space explorer group to find Voltron
and annihilate Zarkon.
After
finding Voltron, five new pilots are assigned to control the five
lions. The five new Voltron pilots are: Hunk, pilot of the Yellow
Lion, Keith, pilot of the Black Lion, Lance, pilot of the Red Lion,
Pidge, pilot of the Green Lion and Sven, pilot of the Blue Lion.
Voltron lives on a remote planet, Arus, which is being attacked by a monster or a “Robeast” that King Zarkon has created. Upon attack, the five pilots or the “space explorers” board their lions. They first attempt to defeat the monster individually. Once the monster demonstrates that it is too strong, the lions would assemble together to form one robot, chanting this dialogue:
“…Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! LET'S GO VOLTRON FORCE! Form feet and legs! Form arms and torso! And, I'll form the head!”
After joining together, they would teach the monster not to mess with Voltron again through different lion head attacks and energy weapons. They would slice up the monster into pieces with the “blazing sword” that they have formed.Every ending of Voltron is undeniably a classic. Whether you’ve seen it five or fifty times, you’d still think that each episode is the coolest.
